Flite

Provides high performance dynamic riding with big lofty jumps even in the lightest of wind

The Flite is the lightest Kite we’ve ever made, but don’t let that make you think it’s like every other light wind kite on the market. This kite isn’t just built to fly in light wind, it’s built to perform. Tested on the rocky pacific northwest waters, the Flite’s innovative construction still allows riders the chance to ride waves, boost big lofty jumps, and can build immense speed for those on a foil board. The Flite truly is the only high performance light wind kite

3 STRUT FRAME

This precision engineered wide 3 strut frame is constructed to get the most power out of every square inch possible for high velocity foil boarding and pure performance in light winds.

Constructed with a custom blend two dacrons provides the a carefully crafted balance of tenacity and agility. The struts are made of KP-E dacron providing incredible strength, durability, and rigidity; While the leading edge is made from Teijin dacron in order to reduce the overall weight without sacrificing its moxie.

BRIDLES

A fixed short line bridle with a floating V design and a two pulley system creates direct and snappy response while also keeping bar pressure low. New to this generation are larks head loops on front bridles, and knots on the back lines making for an innovative system that stabilizes the leading edge. This allows the Flite to lift out of a loop and avoiding a stall for maximum climb.

SAFETY SYSTEM

A single front line flag out systemin is used allowing the rider to achieve maximum de-power if the trim loop release is activated..

WARNING! It is crucial that the bar you are using utilizes this system.

Note: For Next Gen kites we have changed the bridles on our kites so that the front attachments have loops and the back attachments have knots.

In order to use a previous generation Ocean Rodeo bar with a Next Gen kite, you must first install the OR Bar Bridle Adapter Kit (which can be purchased from a dealer or directly from Ocean Rodeo) to the bridles on the kite. This will change the bridles so that the front attachments have knots and the back attachments have loops. Thus making it compatible with the older model bars.

MATERIALS

DIMENSION POLYANT K-PE DACRON

Dimension Polyant’s K-PE dacron utilizes PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) fibers in the warp direction. PEN has a higher modulus than polyester and these fabrics exhibit approximately 30 to 40% lower stretch than their polyester equivalents. This makes K-PE the ideal choice for kite dacron where low stretch is a top priority.

K-PE fabrics are produced utilizing DP’s patented X-PLY® technique assuring reliable performance and the highest quality lamination available on the market.

TEIJIN TECHNO FORCE D2 RIPSTOP

Designed specifically for the kiteboarding market, Teijin’s Technoforce D2 Ripstop has high tear resistance, low stretch, and is incredibly light weight.

Each Strand of yarn is individually coated before being woven together. A second surface coating is then applied to the material, providing long term endurance.

Teijin D2 is the benchmark in quality with proven superiority in durability and dynamics.

LOAD DISTRIBUTION

15 years of kite design and manufacturing has taught us more than a few tricks about using strategic seam placement to reduce the stress points between the trailing edge’s dacron and the canopy’s ripstop materials. This combinded with load distributing reinforcement patches enhance the kite’s performance and durability.

A few of us have these at my spot in Qld Australia, and they are becoming the first choice for many LW kiters & foilers. There is nothing much they don’t do well + it’s super hard to backstall them, so great for waves and downwinders. As the earlier review mentioned, they loop easily and gently but if you pull it a little early, you can certainly get a G force on.
As far as foiling and light wind goes, there simply is nothing in the same class. The amount of light wind “duels” that i win on my 14.5 is ridiculous, and if I pull out the 17, it’s good night Irene. My record is foiling in 5kts on the 17. I’m only learning foil so I stuffed my turns and couldn’t toeside but with a tack or jibe in the skill kit 5kts will be a lot of fun.
    These kites are killer.

I have got my 2018 Flite 14,5 3 weeks ago – and haven’t been flying anything since I got it. I get going from 4-5 m/s and up til around 8 ms. This is a perfect windrange for summer winds. The Flite 14.5 doesn’t feel bigger than my Flite 12, but gives a lot more watertime. Agree – colorcoding of lines are not good

Fantastic kite. I’m fortunate to be able to choose and afford exactly what gear I like, and I’m now on Flites for the third year in a row.

OR says this is a lightweight kite, and maybe it seemed like my 2016 kites were more lightly built, but the 2018 versions seem just as robust as any other kite, and I’ve never ripped or had any pinholes or anything in these kites (but truth be told the longest I’ve had a single Flite was 2 seasons so it’s possible that the kites show their lightweightedness if you own the kite for a longer period, I don’t know).

I initially chose this kite because of how playful and functional the 12m was in light wind. I have ended up getting 8m, 10m, and 14.5m kites though. The small sizes are super in stronger winds, and the 14.5m is still super playful, fast, and fun in light wind. I honestly don’t frown if the wind is light as I can still have a ton of fun in light wind on the big kite. It is cliche but it’s so true for me at my home spot (Squamish Spit) that if it ends up being a rare light wind day I’m frequently the last one out and still trying tricks while everyone else is cracking a beer. The 14.5m isn’t too much of a jump from a 10m (still sufficient overlap) and gives me extra light wind range, but I mainly got the 14.5m over the 12m as my secondary spot (Mission Island, Thunder Bay, Ontario) is frequently light wind and 12m kites are often not quite enough.

I started focusing on strapless freestyle about 5 years ago and also discovered the Flite for it’s ease of flying and mellower kiteloop. The kite relaunches super easy (no need to pull the opposite centre line), has lighter bar pressure, is fast turning when you want, and can yank you across the water like you’ve lost it barefoot waterskiing if you screw up your kiteloop, but in general the kite is gentler and I like this as I want to focus more on the subtleties of what you do with your feet and board when it’s only wind holding the board to your feet. I learned on C kites (old Naish) and then had hybrid-C kites (LF Havocs and then NRGs) and then realized while trying to learn strapless backroll kiteloops with a grab that it sure is nice to have a mellower loop. The ‘excitement’ of a grunty kite was fun for a while, but my interests have changed.

My only complaints for the 2018 year are minor. First, it’s nice that OR put a velcro tab on the struts for you to put your bridle when wrapping up the kite and for holding the bridle while pumping up, but a part of the bridle can still hook around the wingtip causing a tangle when inflating your kite as it flaps about in the wind (perhaps add another little bit of velcro OR?) Pretty minor though, you just have to watch as you inflate your kite. Second, the colour coding of lines on the bar and bridle attachment points were confusing at first. There is green, grey, black, red, and blue cord and colours to match up. I was told by OR that the many colours had to do with maintaining production if in manufacturing only certain colours of bridle cord are available. Once I figured this out I was fine, but for beginners this might cause a lot of anxiety.

Overall fantastic job OR. excellent kite!
